There is a valid concern among our Ontario licensed real estate agents who have opted to work directly for a home builder in Ontario.  A licensed real estate agent in Ontario must receive their pay from an Ontario real estate Brokerage.  Giving up their real estate license and terminating it through RECO would allow them to get paid directly from the Builder. This poses a concern to real estate agents who want to keep their license active and in full force with RECO but do not want to be part of a Brokerage.


The following is a typical question that we receive often as Ontario agents call our Office to enquire about the “home builder pay cheque” dilemma.


“I have completed all the required courses (including the articling) and would like to register.
I live in Ottawa and I am currently working for a builder/developer(who is not a registered broker and does not have a brokerage division). Reco is telling me that it is a conflict if I work for a builder and I am registered even if I am inactive, I only  want to park my license.
Do you know what my options are? I have emailed RECO as they suggested but that was over a week ago and still I have not recieved a response from them. You advise would be appreciated.”
